ADRIAN SLADE: A Biographical Note

ADRIAN, Julian Slade’s younger brother, read Law at Cambridge but most of his spare time was spent acting or writing and performing satirical songs in cabaret venues – Footlights  ‘Smokers-,  college and private dance cabarets  and , later, clubs, public occasions (sometimes with Julian) and Liberal Party conferences.  He was President of Footlights in 1958/9. He joined the Liberal Party shortly after he became a copywriter in London’s then largest advertising agency J Walter Thompson.. He continued  to double (or triple?) as an adman, cabaret performer and politician for nearly 40 years. He stood as a Liberal candidate in four general elections  – 1966,  and 74(2)  in Putney and 1987 in Wimbledon. His votes in each seat remain the highest yet achieved by a Liberal or Liberal Democrat.  In 1981 he was finally elected to the Greater London Council as Liberal Member for Richmond, in which he remained  until Mrs Thatcher abolished the GLC in 1986. In 1987/88 he became the last President of the Liberal Party before merger with the SDP. He was awarded a CBE for political and public service in 1988.Throughout this time he had continued to work in advertising agencies (two large and one small)  and then as a marketing and PR consultant, keeping his musical hand in by writing scurrilous ‘glee club’ songs about the Liberal Party and Liberal Democrats. He has been married to his very patient wife SUE for 60 years. They have two well past grown–up off-spring  *NICOLA and RUPERT, another adman, marketing consultant and spare time stand up comic
